Let’s Play in the Leaves

fall is here

The evenings are cooler around here now and I find myself finally shutting some of the windows and making hot tea after dinner. Not looking forward to winter but I am looking forward to a fun filled weekend! What are you weekend plans? Do you like this time of year?

Polka Dots and Ponytails

Polka Dots and Ponytail

Polka Dots seem to be all the rage right now. I’m in love with the JCrew sweaters, but my purse is definitely not. There are affordable options though, if you need your polka dot fix. Plus ponytails- there’s just something about sweaters and ponytails that I love. My hair seems to find itself in a ponytail at the end of every day lately and it’s in a ponytail all weekend long it seems. Speaking of weekends, enjoys yours!

Fashion Friday: Be Yourself

be yourself

I think everyone struggles a little with just being themselves at one point or another in their life. I know I have. Sometimes I still struggle with it, depending on who I’m with or the situation I’m in. I’ve just found that there are certain people that make me feel more at ease than others. Those are the kind of people I like to surround myself with. My husband is one of those people. Not only does he help me feel comfortable with who I am, but he makes me feel confident in my own skin. That is a wonderful thing. So whether it’s a significant other, a family member, or a friend- make sure you have people by your side that you know you can be yourself around. It’s so important to be true to who you are and not feel like that’s a bad thing.

Deep words for a Friday? Nah, just common sense. Have a great weekend everyone and a million thanks for participating in my survey and giveaway. I appreciate your constant support so much! This is the last day to enter the giveaway and I’ll be announcing the winner on Monday.

Five Fashion Themed Books from a Salt Lake City Fashionista

Hey, guys! My name’s Rebecca and I write the fashion blog Rebecca (hearts). Kim asked me to be a guest blogger while she was away and I jumped at the chance.

Anyone who’s been reading Kim’s blog for very long has probably noticed that she’s a total book lover. This girl can read! Now, I’m not as much of a reader. I’m ashamed to admit I’m lucky to finish a book every few months. But, there are a few books that I reference over and over again and make sure to keep in arm’s reach.

Sure, they may not be literary classics (one day I plan on reading a bunch of the books that Kim has already devoured), but the books I keep close by tend to be style or fashion-centric.

1

The first book is 9 Heads. I’ve been trying to improve my fashion illustration. I certainly have a long way to go, which is why I keep this amazing reference book close by.

2

Some days I just need a little visual stimulation. That’s when I grab Artwear. This collection of beautiful images of wearable art is just the thing to bust out of an inspiration rut.

3

Coco Chanel is arguably the most influential woman ever in the fashion world. Her book, The Gospel According to Coco Chanel is perfect to grab and skim through any time I wonder, “What would Coco do?”

4

And because style is about much more than what you have on, I love the book, Better than Beauty: A Guide to Charm. Girls nowadays aren’t sent to charm school, but that doesn’t mean charm is useless. This book was first published in 1938, but the hints, tips and tricks are just as useful today.

I read The End of Fashion in college and it was one of the only books I opted to keep at the end of the semester. This book describes how the relationship between marketing and fashion changed couture as we know it. I won’t bore you with all the details, but if you are remotely interested in the history of the fashion industry over the last 30 years, I highly suggest this book.

So those are my favorite fashion-themed books. And I promise, next time I’m in a bookstore I’ll pick up a classic. A girl’s gotta be well-rounded, right?

What are the books you keep nearby? What books inspire you?
*****
This is a scheduled guest post while I’m away sunning it up in California. This post was written by my good blogger friend, Rebecca who writes the fashion blog, Rebecca (hearts). Wasn’t this a fun post? It combines a couple of my favorite things, fashion & books! And since I will read just about anything that’s put in my hands, I think I’ll be adding these to my to-reads list!

It’s awesome because Rebecca lives in Salt Lake, so I get to read all her recommendations on where to shop locally and go try them out! Plus we have similar taste so when I want to look good I just copy one of her outfits. Ha! Rebecca just recently did some fashion segments on Fox 13 which you should check out and you can also follow her Facebook page. She’s also an amazing artist and I love to check out her fashion sketches and her sewing projects. Thanks Rebecca!

Five Favorite Things

Five of my favorite things right now!

Photobucket

1. ONeill Chantal Sundress from Buckle– Just bought this and I love it. It is so comfortable and the perfect length!

2. Neutrogena Triple Moisture Deep Recovery Hair Mask– My hair has been so dry. I thought it would get better once winter was over, but no such luck. I finally tried this deep conditioning treatment from Neutrogena and it was like magic! No more static fly-aways. Yay!

3. Illume Scent Diffusers– I have Bella by Illume which I bought at Home Goods. These are the best diffusers. They last so long and the scent reaches the entire room. I prefer diffusers to candles these days.

4. Hibiscus Mint Iced Tea– We’ve been making batches of this with the mint from our yard. It is the perfect refreshing summer drink! You can find recipes for it all over the internet but Martha Stewart has a good version.

5. oGorgeous Bowtie Pilates Mat Sling– I told you how much I love Blogilates. Well, I also love their mat sling. My old elastic one was stretched and worn out. This new one is made with leather and velcro and it’s super cute! My mat no longer slides out of the sling while I’m walking!

What is your favorite thing right now?

Blackout

Blackout

As much as I love the vibrant spring colors right now, I loved this heart top enough to want to put together a set using it. Don’t worry, I added shorts for good measure. I do have to admit though, I’ll be happily bringing out the May flowers for the next outfit post! It’s Wednesday which means I’m both happy and sad that we’re already/only half way to the weekend. Andy and I went out for sushi last night and had a really nice time. I love when something can make me forget the hum drum of regular life, you know?

Movie to Fashion

Photobucket

Andy and I watched The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo this weekend. We read the book when it first came out and later watched the European version of the film so we were anxious to see if the English version would be good. It’s not a book or a movie for the faint of heart. We really liked it but both agreed that if you hadn’t read the book, you might have a hard time following the plot. The book is just full of details that couldn’t all be pushed into a two and a half hour movie. Overall, we think they did a really nice job with it. I decided to whip up some fashion inspiration based on Lisbeth Salander. My version is not so goth and a little on the feminine side- something I might wear myself. Lisbeth Salander might not like everything in this set but she sure did clean up nice when it came to swindling a bunch of money from Wennerstrom.

Ready for Spring

Oh boy, am I anxious for spring. I’m done with these gray, dreary skies- bring out the sun! In all reality it’ll be weeks before I can officially unpack my shorts and sandals, but I’m so ready.I noticed that some of the irises in my back yard are already starting to poke up and here at work, the daffodils are already blooming- I love seeing them every morning as I come in to the building. If it’s warm enough this weekend, I’m going to get out and do some work in the yard clearing out some of the flower beds.

Are you anxious for spring?

ps- isn’t that ruffled tank super cute? It’s from H&M. I may have to get one for myself.

pps- it’s my cousin-in-laws birthday today! She writes a nifty little blog that you can read HERE. Please hop over and tell her Happy Birthday!
